Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Vegetables
- 6 slices bacon chopped
- 1 pound ground beef (90% lean)
- 1/2 cup onion finely diced
Seasonings
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Cheese and Batter
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup baking mix such as Bisquick
- 1 cup milk
- 2 eggs
Others
- Cooking spray
- Assorted toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and pickles
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and coat a 9-inch deep dish pie pan or regular 10-inch pie pan with cooking spray.
- Cook bacon: Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chopped bacon and cook until crisp, about 4-5 minutes. Remove bacon from pan and place on paper towels to drain.
- Drain bacon grease: Remove all but 1 teaspoon of bacon grease from the skillet to cook the meat.
- Cook beef and onions: Add ground beef and finely diced onion to the pan. Cook for 6-7 minutes, breaking up the beef with a spatula until browned.
- Season meat: Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder and cook for another minute to blend flavors.
- Add bacon to meat: Return two-thirds of the cooked bacon to the beef mixture, reserving the remaining bacon for garnish.
- Assemble pie base: Transfer the meat and bacon mixture to the prepared pie plate. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the meat.
- Prepare batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together baking mix (Bisquick), milk, and eggs until smooth.
- Pour batter: Pour the batter mixture over the meat and cheese in the pie pan, spreading evenly.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until the pie is golden brown and a knife inserted into center comes out clean.
- Garnish and serve: Remove from oven and top with the reserved bacon and your choice of burger toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and pickles. Cut into wedges and serve immediately.
Notes
- Use 90% lean ground beef for good flavor with less grease; drain any excess if using higher fat content meat.
- Use a deep dish 9-inch or regular 10-inch pie pan to hold all the batter properly.
- Freshly grate your cheddar cheese for the best melt and flavor.
- Customize toppings to your liking with classic burger fixes like lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles.
