Description

Applebee’s Chicken Wonton Tacos combine crispy baked wonton shells filled with flavorful hoisin chicken and a refreshing Asian-inspired slaw, topped with sweet chili sauce, cilantro, and sesame seeds for a deliciously crunchy and savory appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken

  • 2 chicken breasts, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp minced fresh ginger

Asian-inspired Slaw

  • 1 (397g) bag coleslaw
  • 4 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp honey

For Tacos + Toppings

  • 16 Wonton wrappers
  • Sweet chili sauce, to serve
  • Chopped cilantro, to serve
  • Sesame seeds, to serve

Instructions

  1. Prepare Wonton Shells: Preheat oven to 375 F. Spray wonton wrappers with cooking spray or brush lightly with olive or canola oil, then drape them over the side of a 9×13 baking dish. Bake for 7-8 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning. Remove from oven and gently pull wonton shells apart while still pliable to create spaces for filling. Return to oven and bake for another 7-8 minutes until crisp and golden.
  2. Cook Chicken: In a large bowl, combine the diced chicken breasts with hoisin sauce, sesame oil, soy sauce, minced garlic, and ginger. Heat a large skillet over high heat and sauté the marinated chicken for 7-8 minutes, tossing frequently until fully cooked and browned.
  3. Make Asian Slaw: In a separate large bowl, mix the coleslaw, thinly sliced green onions, rice vinegar, and honey together until well combined.
  4. Assemble Tacos: Spoon the cooked chicken mixture into the crispy wonton shells. Top each with a generous serving of the Asian-inspired slaw, then drizzle with sweet chili sauce. Garnish with chopped cilantro and a sprinkle of sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • For a low-carb alternative, substitute lettuce wraps for the wonton wrappers.
  • Store leftover cooked chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or freeze for up to 3 months to maintain freshness.
  • Watch the wonton shells carefully during baking to avoid burning, and handle them gently when pulling apart to prevent cracking.
  • Adjust the amount of sweet chili sauce according to your preferred level of spiciness and sweetness.
